Animated Encounters was set up in 2001 to celebrate and showcase animation. In 2006 the two festivals united as the Encounters Short Film Festival, and we are now known simply as ‘Encounters’. In 2010 Encounters became a qualifying festival for the Academy Awards Short Film Category. Previously screened at Encounters Film Festival and at BUSHO – Budapest Short Film Festival, FILMS TO BREAK PROJECTORS by Tim Iloobia approaches the process of making films in a literal sense and creating visual music through imagery, ‘Films to Break Projectors’ glues and splices 35mm, 16mm, standard and super 8mm filmstrips together to create impossible-to-project celluloid sculptures. During the 2018 edition of the festival 10 803 people attended the film screenings, industry programme and networking events in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Audience figures for this year’s Encounters are not yet available but organisers have described the festival as a success with numerous sold out screenings and packed cinemas.
The 46th International Theatre Festival this year ran from 20 July to 5 August 2018, directed by Antonio Latella and featuring a rich programme of shows and encounters.
